SK Vibemaker - Formally FX (1 half of SK Vibemakers).
Pharell once told me “Anything imagineable is possible”…
SK says: “Im that shy kid who was quite terrified to present his work to the class in school, who now talks to thousands of people on air every week, DJs & hosts in front of many people on stages & manages to interview diva musicans that can often be difficult”
Hailing from North London, SK Vibemakers began as FX & Rainman or The lightskin boy & dark skin boy. SKVM have come through the stages, from Mcing in the school corridors & bedroom sets to pirate radio & commercial radio, playing in the clubs, putting on club events, hosting events, becoming respected mixtape DJs, filming a DVD documentary, having a renowned podcast & more.
Sean ‘FX’ Klarke has become the solo SK Vibemaker in all departments after life choices pulled FX & Rainman in different directions. FX cites working at the BBC & his close relationship with Tim Westwood as a crash course in radio production & DJing.
The beginning of what was eventually to become SK Vibemaker was a strange birth, because SK actually became a DJ by default having been an MC who was a casual record buyer. This was life an official slot on one of Londons most relevant pirate radio stations at the time ‘DeJa Vu FM’. DeJa Vu FM had a big reputation & was the breeding ground for MC/Rappers such as Tinie Tempah, Dizzee Rascal, Kano, Lethal Bizzle, Wiley, Tinchy Stryder, Nasty Crew, JME, Skepta & Boy Better know to name a few. With the spotlight being so bright, this gave SK the platform & exposure to build a reputable show second to none on pirate radio. SK remained on DeJa Vu for 4 years before moving to Pyroradio (internet) for a year stint & then to Rinse (FM & online).
Never content with just being the DJ playing commercial party favourites to get the phone line buzzing & carrying record boxes from venue to venue for a couple hundred pound, SKs call was a different direction. In the early days SK Vibemakers (As a collective) were playing out every weekend at every hotspot in London to organising their own events. But the next phaze was to begin.
SK explains: "I went hard on the radio shows, mixtapes & podcasts because I felt this was a different challenge to just a ‘Pull up that’ in the raves… I had done that so much already… Why prioritise time playing party favourites to an average of a few hundred people a night when our mixtapes, radio shows & podcasts are getting out to many thousands in a week”…
Never one to pull punches, there are few interviews like an SK Vibemaker one… SK says: “Some of my favourite interviews that come to mind have been the ones with JME, Giggs, RZA (of Wu-Tang Clan), J Cole, Kid Cudi, Stormzy, Wiz Khalifa, Wiley, Kano & Sean Paul”
SK got serious with the mixtapes at a time that he kind of fell out of love with DJing in the clubs for a moment, teaming up with many popular UK artists & putting the majority of them up for free promotional download. The artist mixtapes portfolio include: Sway, Bigz, Kano, Meridian Bloodline, Lethal Bizzle, Nolay, Sincere, Lioness, Tinchy Stryder, Aftershock, Maxwell D & Giggs… Plus many other mixtapes series mixing the best in UK & US Hip Hop.
Radio has always been an important piece of the puzzle for SKVM…. With stints on Heat FM, Dejavu, deputy slots on BBC 1xtra (Hip Hop mix show) to being part of the Rinse FM stable that was awarded an FM license…. SK explains… “I have had a lot of different slots on Rinse FM… From 9-11 weekend slots, to weekday evening slots, to weekly afternoon slots, to the current Mon-Thurs 11am-1pm which has to probably be my favourite of the lot”
Asides from the the radio show, SK is currently involved in two monthly events: ‘The Den’ & ‘Unlock’, whilst also DJing for Frisco of Boy Better Know around the world…
